Permanent Secretary, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Mr. Olusade Adesola, has called on technical teachers to open up to new ideas and methods of teaching as technical education is practical-oriented and unique in content and approach, thereby demanding special attention.
The permanent Secretary,who was represented by the Acting Director, Department of Science and Technology, FCTA, Mr. Olabasola kolawole, made the assertion recently while declaring open a three-day workshop organized by the department for technical teachers under it’s purview.
Appreciating the department for it’s determination and unrelenting efforts in the capacity building of teachers, the permanent Secretary said such efforts will definitely ensure consistent improvement in the life quality of skillful students being turned out from the schools.
Commending the teachers for their efforts,he noted that the workshop and it’s theme ‘industrial Technology Education for skills Development’ was apt as it will expand the teachers’ knowledge and help them explore different new ways of approaching and solving problems in teaching and learning of technical subjects.
“To measure up or fit into the world system, teachers and students alike must add value to whatever that’s being done in the field of technology,” he noted.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Acting Director of the department, Mr. Kolawole, who was represented by the Head of Administration, Rakiya Ibrahim, said technology education, being an off-shoot of Industrial Arts/Crafts, seeks to contribute to learners’ overall Scientific and technical literacy.
He explained that in view of the fact that teachers are driving force for the nation’s Technology and innovation,the department deemed it very necessary to organize capacity-building workshop to increase technological knowledge of teachers in the field of Sciences, Technology and innovation.
Noting that thoughtful understanding by teachers on difficult topics in technical subjects will enhance efficient delivery on theory and practical aspects of the topics for optimal students learning outcome, the Acting Director urged the participating teachers to take the workshop seriously so they can maximally draw from the wealth of experiences of the seasoned academicians invited as the resource persons.
Focusing on key technical and difficult subjects, the workshop covered areas such as Electrical and Electronics Technology, Metal works, Mechanical/Automobile, Building Technology, Wood works and many others.
