In a significant move aimed at addressing the unemployment crisis among graduates, the administration of President Bola Tinubu has announced a new initiative to provide monthly allowances to unemployed graduates across Nigeria.
The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, revealed the plan during a recent meeting with a delegation of young Nigerians at his office. Professor Mamman emphasized that the federal government has allocated funds for this project, expressing disappointment over the lack of media coverage on the initiative.
“Something which hasn’t come out strongly in the media and people should know in a very robust way is that every student who has graduated but has not secured a job is entitled to collect an allowance,” Professor Mamman stated. “The government has committed a certain allowance for every unemployed graduate in Nigeria. This is very important for graduates and every Nigerian to know.”
This announcement coincides with ongoing nationwide protests against what demonstrators term “bad governance” and “anti-people” policies. Protesters are demanding a reversal of the removal of the fuel subsidy, a policy change implemented by President Tinubu during his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023.
The introduction of the unemployment allowance is seen as a critical step in mitigating the economic challenges faced by young graduates and addressing the broader issue of youth unemployment in the country. The government hopes this initiative will provide much-needed relief and support to unemployed graduates as they transition into the workforce.
