…mulls stiff measures
The Federal Capital Territory Administration ( FCTA) on Tuesday declared the flood-ravaged Abuja estate, Trademore a disaster area, deserving stiff measures.
The ECONOMIC TIMES had on Friday reported that the whole estate was flooded, and about 116 buildings were affected.
FCTA’s Permanent Secretary, Olusade Adesola who led top management staff on an assessment tour, said the administration was worried over the reoccurring flooding in the Estate and environment and has resolved to take steps to end the menace.
Adesola noted that in a few days’ time, the administration would be taking a strong decision towards mitigating the flooding in the estate and all other places prone to flooding disasters.
Adesola said, “To be able to proffer a solution to the problem, that is why we visited the Trademore, we understand it is a developmental challenge occasioned by the nature of the drainage constructed there.
” More particularly is the risk that people took to construct a low-level home, while on the road you can see the low level of the roof, which abinitio made them vulnerable to flooding.
“We cannot allow the destruction to continue, so in a couple of days, we will be taking appropriate actions.
Having seen the extent of the flooding, we are of the opinion and hereby declare the Trademore Area a disaster zone, and there will be immediate action to remedy the situation “
