The NNPC Ltd/Seplat Energy Joint Venture (JV) has made significant strides in improving eye health in the Ohaji/Egbema community of Imo State through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, “Eye Can See.” As part of this medical outreach, the JV provided free eye health services to individuals with visual impairments, distributing over 10,000 reading glasses and successfully performing 639 eye surgeries, including cataract removals.
This initiative, which began in 2017, has become a cornerstone of NNPC’s upstream investments in the eastern region. To date, the programme has positively impacted over 20,000 people, offering essential health services to those who otherwise had limited access to such care. According to a statement by NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, the outreach underscores the commitment of the NNPC/Seplat partnership to uplifting its host communities.
During the event, Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC’s Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), Bala Wunti, represented by Dr. Obinna Otuu, Manager, JV Asset B, highlighted the importance of the programme. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with NNPC Ltd’s corporate mission of enriching the lives of Nigerians. “We are more than just an energy provider. We are a partner in progress, dedicated to making sustainable contributions to the communities that support us,” Wunti remarked.
The “Eye Can See” programme not only offers immediate medical care but also educates beneficiaries on lifestyle choices that help prevent conditions like hypertension and diabetes, which can lead to permanent vision loss. Wunti further expressed his appreciation for the support of the local government, beneficiaries, and NNPC Ltd’s partners, adding that the partnership with Seplat is paving the way for a brighter future where access to essential health services is available to all.
